After widespread national as well as international acclaim, Rituparno Ghosh's 'Chokher Bali', starring former Miss World and Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai, has now been chosen as the opening film of the prestigious Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) this year.

This year's edition of the IFFLA will also feature a tribute to award-winning actress Kiron Kher.

The actress, who has won a number of awards for her performances in 'Khamosh Paani' and filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh's 'Bariwali', will be felicitated at this year's IFFLA on April 15.

The IFFLA has also organised an on-stage discussion as well as a question and answer (Q&A) session with Kiron Kher about her outstanding career.

In fact, Sabiha Sumar's 'Khamosh Paani', for which the actress won the Silver Leopard for Best Actress at the 2003 Locarno Film Festival, will be premiered at the fete.

The five-day fete, whose aim ever since its inception has been to pave way for a greater appreciation of Indian cinema by providing the public with a selection of films from and about India by Indian and international directors, will this year open on April 14 with Ritupano Ghosh's 'Chokher Bali'.

''A period drama based on Rabindranath Tagore's novel by the same name, 'Chokher Bali', featuring Aishwarya as a young widow in British-occupied Bengal during the early 1900s, will be screened on the opening night of the IFFLA on April 14,'' the organisers of the festival said.

This year, the festival will screen 24 films, including 10 feature films. Along with the screening of the films, IFFLA will conduct seminars and panel discussions and will provide opportunities to filmmakers to have discussions with North American filmmakers.
