Several years ago Mithun Chakravarthy and Mani Ratnam were supposed to work together in a Tamil film, a plan which did not materialise. Now, after many years, they are set to work together in Ratnam's next film, Guru, starring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in the lead.

Mithun will play a positive character in the film, which is set in the backdrop of the 1960s. “Yes, it's true that I have signed Guru but I have been strictly warned by Mani not to speak about the film,” says Mithun. “All I can say is that I play a socialist in the film. It's an interesting character and I am very excited about working with Mani Ratnam.”

Mithun further adds, “Working with Mani was long overdue for me. We were supposed to work together earlier for one of his Tamil films, Anandam. We couldn't do so because he wanted me to cut off my hair, but I could not do so at that time as I was working in about 15 other films which required my long-haired look. If I had chopped off my hair then those 15 producers and their films would have gone for a toss.”

This time too, Ratnam wants Mithun to cut his hair very short. “I have told all my producers to complete shooting my parts before May 15, as I will be shooting for a whole month at a stretch with Mani, from May 15 to June 15.” Mithun feels that one's 30-year stint in the film industry becomes worth it when a director like Mani Ratnam comes forward to offer one a stunning role. Speaking about Ratnam, he adds, “Mani called me the other day saying that we are long due to work in a film together. I agreed. When he narrated the story, and described my character, I agreed immediately.”
