The Bachchans were present along with to be daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai and good friend, Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh in toe. The hi-profile presence got even the usually media-shy Tabu, the lead female protagonist in the film, excited.
“I am so happy to have Mr Bachchan here, I am really proud, and I want to thank him for coming. It feels great to have such support,” gushed Tabu.
‘The Namesake’ based on a first novel by Jhumpa Lahriri, is about an Indian Bengali family, portrayed brilliantly by Irrfan Khan and Tabu who settle in the USA, and their son's search for his own identity.
Though the film may sound like any of the numerous ‘NRI’ films, Mira needn't worry about being pigeonholed, as there are plenty who vouched for her work.
“Whenever she makes a movie she always gives her own deft touch to it. We all look up to her and we are all very jealous of her,” said filmmaker Rakeysh Mehra.
“Mira in my opinion is a thinker and a director who directs from her heart. It’s the ‘Mira Magic’,” said Sameera Reddy.
We caught up with the star of the evening in her Salaam Bombay avtaar to know about her expectations from the film. “Expectations nahi rakhne ka, dil se picture banane ka aur audience ko decide karne dene ka (One should not expect, just make a film with your heart and then let the audience decide),” Mira said.
After the film hits theatres on March 23, we will know if the hype and hoopla around this film translates into box-office gold.
