The digital magic

When Aishwarya Rai danced to AR Rahaman’s soothing music in the song 'Barso re' in Guru, at least a part of the magic was created by Digital Intermediate technology (DI).

The early morning scenes in the song were shot in broad daylight and later, during post production, digitally colour corrected for the effect, says Senthil Kumar, visual effects director (Chennai), Prime Focus Ltd.

It has provided a creative edge especially to the night scenes — more night scenes have been shot since the advent of DI in 2003 than earlier. DI also helps overcome practical difficulties while shooting.

For instance, the parade scenes in Mangal Pandey The Rising involving several thousands of soldiers, were shot with a handful of people and later corrected using the crowd multiplication technique. The scenes showing Nariman Point in the 70s in Guru were shot in Pondicherry and later colour corrected for the effect.

Bollywood produced about 110 films in 2006 and about 45 movies had gone for digital colour correction, either partial or complete.

DI, the process of digitising a motion picture and manipulating colour and other image characteristics to change the look, is gaining popularity in Bollywood movies. “Within two or three years, DI will become a standard for post production,” asserts Amit Gupta.

Digital Intermediate technology has seen an exponential growth in India since 2003. From two films in 2003, Digital Intermediate technology was used in 17 films in 2004, 40 films in 2005 and over 100 films in 2006.
