"Kajra Re" Feedback

Aishwarya Rai made a special appearance in the recently released Abhishek-Rani-Amitabh starrer "Bunty Aur Babli." The critics sound off on her appearance in the item song "Kajra Re":

The screen is flushed with brilliant colours and a rustic flavour is maintained even during slick dance numbers. The rawness of which can be seen in the item song, Kajrare naina featuring Aishwarya Rai along with Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan.

The spicy ditty is awkwardly introduced into the movie. But once the song begins to roll, the audience, the Bachchans, the extras in the frame all end up drooling in unison at the hot, hot, hot Aishwarya Rai. Yes folks, she looks awesome. This one is truly an 'item'.

But the problem with the post-interval portions is that it lacks the meat to keep the viewer's interest alive. Everyone eagerly awaits fireworks when the two Bachchans come face to face, but their first scene together [the drunken act!] is boring and long-drawn-out and even the song that follows, with Aishwarya Rai, doesn't set the screen ablaze or work any kind of a magic. In fact, this song is a mere prop to enhance the star-value of the film.

Aishwarya Rai looks completely stunning in her fun song-and-dance number. She lights up the screen during her appearance.

Dashrath Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) is the ACP sniffing hot on their cold trail. Dashrath is probably among Amitabh's best roles, despite the ruffled and aged appearance. Aided by his excellent ease with the local vocab, he brilliantly personifies the tangible instincts of a policeman.

His panache is potent enough to stun you once again, as he juggles Aishwarya Rai in an out-of-turn, if luscious, item number.

Watch out for some mad antics — dancing on top of trains, crazy getups, songs on the run, a phirang couple to poke fun at and even Aishwarya Rai in a special appearance.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s score may be average to listen to but Shaad’s picturisation makes the songs come alive. Aishwarya’s song lacks punch but she sizzles nevertheless.

Direly confused about plot mechanics, Shaad Ali Sahgal and Co merely succeed in drumming up some engrossing passages: like Bunty’s face-off with his railway ticket collector father, the terrifically choreographed Aishwarya Rai item number, and Babli’s heartfelt complaint to Bunty that he has not cared to even look at the face of their newborn child. That’s it.

As for the senior Bachchan, in how many ways has he played the cop before? And yet his surly, boorish lawman's role here delights you, specially when he gets on the dance-floor with his son and Aishwarya Rai for a rabble-rousing Qawwalli, that could possibly rank as the grandfather of item songs.

It's also fun to watch father and son matching steps with each other in the Ash song.

Oh! By the way there is Aishwarya Rai too in an item number, all silken grace, all tempting.
