Anu Malik’s 15-year-old daughter, Anmol, has lent her voice for a song in J P Dutta’s remake of Umrao Jaan, starring Aishwarya Rai. She was given the lyrics two days before the recording, and completed the five-and-a-half minute song in fifteen minutes, at Krishna Studio, Jogeshwari, on Thursday.

The classical song will be picturised on the young Aishwarya Rai. The same lyrics will also be picturised later on the grown-up Aishwarya, but that song has been sung by Richa Sharma.

Big plans

J P Dutta and Aishwarya were present for Anmol’s recording. “Dutta saab took a few notes and ghumaoed it round her head. He said ‘nazar utar deta hoon’. What better blessing can one give!” said the proud father Anu Malik, who was also present at the studio. “Anmol has written and composed 115 English songs, and plans to cut an international album in the future,” he added.

When the Umrao Jaan song was offered to Anmol, the teenager had to pinch herself to believe it. Speaking to hitList after the recording, Anmol said, “Once I knew the exact words, I practised and sang it in front of my father. We had a rehearsal for two hours, and then dad said I was ready. The song is absolutely divine.”

“It’s a huge opportunity; I am just in school, and extremely honoured. Doing my first song under my dad has been an incredible experience. He has always been forthright in correcting me,” she revealed.

Papa played favourites?

Considering that Malik is composing for Dutta’s film, did Anmol get the opportunity owing to papa’s recommendation? “No. Dutta heard her singing when we were in London last year,” says Malik. “Anmol was humming one of her English songs. When Dutta told me he wanted Anmol to sing for the film, I was shocked. Clearly, he had kept her voice in his mind,” said Malik.

Anmol, an ex-Jamnabai Narsee student, is now completing her final year of schooling at École Mondiale World School, Juhu. Earlier, she has sung a few lines in Biwi No1 and Badal. “This is my first full-fledged song. I would love to become a singer, but first, let me have a solid degree. My parents are quite academically inclined,” she explained, looking at her father.
