What preparations are you making for Jodha Akbar?

I leave for Jodha Akbar on November 6th. Swords are breaking. Horses are throwing me off (laughs). Thankfully, it wasn't a serious fall; my leg got caught in the stirrup. I got dragged a bit. I suppose these things will keep happening.

But they happen to you quite frequently.

Yeah, I know. I think I've people's good wishes with me. In spite of these accidents nothing serious happens to me. The only way to perfection is to fall and rise. If you don't fall you never know the pleasure of rising.

Being a father has an added responsibility. The risks you take could affect your son if, something were to happen to you.

Right. That's why I stretch myself a little more so I set a good example for my son. It's more important to learn to rise after the fall than to not fall. Sure, I've to exercise that little bit of caution for Rayhaan's sake. I guess I fell off the horse during the rehearsals for Jodha Akbar so it doesn't happen with the camera rolling. Looking at where I'm coming from – Koi Mil Gaya, Lakshya, Krissh – and now Dhoom 2 and Jodha Akbar, it's like the whole spectrum. Life is very interesting. As an actor I'm getting to explore different areas. I'm truly enjoying myself. Jodha Akbar takes me to a place where I've never travelled even in my imagination. The journey is fascinating. I've been reading up books on the Mughal period. All the rest of the research is being done by Ashutosh Gowariker.

This film is a contrast for Aishwarya Rai and you after Dhoom 2.

People are already talking about how good we look together in Dhoom 2. That feels good, considering we were considered a mismatch at one time. With our light eyes and fair skin we were seen as siblings. I don't think I've looked better with any other actress. We've two films together, so we better look good.

The promos of Dhoom 2 have created a buzz.

That's exciting not scary for me. Why be scared of what we worked towards creating, namely an excitement. Surprisingly when I look back I don't think I've enjoyed acting in any film as much as Dhoom 2. That character really appeals to me. He allows me to be in a space that fascinates me. It allowed me to exercise a freedom that I wouldn't allow myself in real life. I've always wanted to do a character like in Dhoom 2 who's stylish, charming, mysterious, dangerous, sinister, intense…. It's such a departure from the good-guy roles I've been doing. Till now directors kept casting me in noble parts. Dhoom 2 gave me a chance to explore a new facet of my life.
