Today Bollywood actresses are tagged ‘sexy’. Priyanka Chopra is glamorous, Rani Mukherjee is gorgeous and Preity Zinta is bubbly. And there are others like Mallika Sherawat and Sherlyn Chopra who are bindaas babes. But then how come all the ‘beautiful’ women of the yesteryears looked elegant, graceful and their beauty was timeless?
These women never found the need to flaunt their assets or display cleavage to titillate audiences. Even Nutan clad in a sari was sensuous half a decade ago or Madhubala giving her ever beautiful smile was enough for all the men in the world including other actors to go weak in their knees.
But today with movies having become so commercialized and the amount of stress and pressure on the leading actresses to look so damn good seems to have taken a toll on their natural charm and beauty. Actresses today spend hours in their make-up vans and trailers trying to look their best and yet can’t seem to live up to the standards of a Nargis or a Sharmila Tagore.
Even post the 60’s, there were still beautiful women around like Sharmila Tagore, Dimple Kapadia and Neetu Singh who were classical beauties in their own right. Gradually as time passed, the Madhuri’s and the Juhi’s were the last leg of natural beauties to grace the silver screens and importance was given to looking sexy rather than looking beautiful.
