The transcript below is taken from Aishwarya Rai's one and only online chat which was conducted on Indiatimes chat in conjunction with the release of Devdas on July 25th 2002.
Vikesh > Is Devdas a milestone for you?
Aishwarya Rai > By the looks of it yes, and for multiple reasons. Definitely, for the film itself and the role. And that's because for the kind of record it has created, it's a classic of its kind and it was given the honour of being part of the Cannes Film Festival. It's definitely a milestone.
Remi > In the 'Man-Dola' sequence in Devdas, how did it feel matching steps with the best in the competition (Madhuri)?
Aishwarya Rai > It was like matching steps with the best of the best, was an absolute honour. She is someone whom I have admired over the years. Working with her was an absolute pleasure. We had a blast doing it. She is a great dancer. We both work towards excelling in what we do. And we both give our best towards it rather than competing, which is what makes it healthy and fun.
Rahul_bhatia_scb > How much are you satisfied with your performance in Devdas and what are your future plans?
Aishwarya Rai > In terms of my satisfaction it really depends on the audiences' verdict. For me it was a satisfying experience. So far, the audience response has been overwhelming and very encouraging for my future endeavor as an actress.
Sweetness > What quality would you say you have in common with 'Paro'?
Aishwarya Rai > You want to get to know me a bit too closely for my comfort (smiles)! I would say, the quality to speak volumes without really being that verbose - innate strength and silent conviction.
Maddy143 > What innovative thing did you learn from the role of 'Paro'?
Aishwarya Rai > How to keep a Diya burning for years... HAHAHAHA!
Abhi_007 > Kya taareef karoon us husn ki; jo tumhe khuda ne diya; saare husn ka jalwa tumhari jholi mein dall kar; ghaayal hamein kar diya. So tell me, what's the secret of your beauty?
Aishwarya Rai > A great stylist, a better cinematographer and a very appreciative audience. Thank you.
Diva > How was it working with Shah Rukh Khan?
Aishwarya Rai > I am sure it lives up to all your expectations and more. He is a great co-star and a very passionate actor. You are evidently an avid fan of his, and that's why you are asking. Your adulation is justified.
Nisha > How would you compare Bhansali's interpretation of Devdas with that of Bimal Roy's and PC Barua's?
Aishwarya Rai > With due respect, I have yet to see earlier versions of both these great filmmakers. When people ask me what was my preparation for Devdas, I say that it was that I had not watched any of the earlier versions. It's because I did not want my performance to be influenced (visual reference) by any of the earlier versions. With due respects again, I say that I wanted to do justice to the director's (Bhansali) interpretation of the cinema. Yes, now that Devdas has released I intend to see the earlier versions and then will be able to give you a profound analysis.
Ritika > Whose thought was 'Issh' in Devdas?
Aishwarya Rai > Definitely Sanjay Leela Bhansali's because it is a very endearing term in Bengali. So we all found it very charming and we even continued with it long after the film (shooting) was over.
Priyanka > Do you think Devdas will do better in India or abroad?
Aishwarya Rai > Tough question. But as a subject, it's a classic as far as Indian mind set goes. By the looks of it, it has already started doing well. As for abroad I can say that when we went to the Cannes we saw the cross-over audience were very appreciative. So, it might have heralded a beginning.
Preetis > I think in the end Paro should have hugged Devdas. That would have left me happier. Overall a wonderful film. Your comments on the film's ending.
Aishwarya Rai > Thank you so much. I agree, but alas! We hugged anyways when the director called "cut".
Cota363 > Do you like people calling you Aishwarya or Ash ?
Aishwarya Rai > I prefer Aishwarya. I always have. But for some strange reason people found my name difficult in the beginning. Now they are getting used to it so I am back to hearing Aishwarya again.
Rai2rai > If you receive the Oscar award for Devdas and have thirty seconds to speak, whom will you thank and why?
Aishwarya Rai > You think thirty seconds will suffice, given the Indian tradition of thanking all the loved ones?
K_padmaja > Which part of the movie Devdas made you feel nervous?
Aishwarya Rai >> Well, I don't know about the nervous bit. But the climax of the film was definitely emotionally disturbing to deal with.
Madhur > Sanjay Leela Bhansali and you seem to be working up some great magic. Could you comment on that?
Aishwarya Rai > I agree whole-heartedly! I think we have done two very magical films that are dear to our hearts and satisfying in our art form/careers. The prerogative is his, but I would love us to continue working together. We have a great rapport.
Ashishpandey > Which is your favourite scene in Devdas ?
Aishwarya Rai > The whole film is extremely memorable. It's difficult to pick a particular scene. Randomly speaking, the scene when Paro meets Devdas after her marriage and asks him to stop drinking. Also the scene when she meets Chandramukhi, the first time. And there are so many others.
Fromdallas > I have been your fan for many years. Although you are great in emotional scenes I think you should also take up some light roles. And flash your 120 Watt smile :).
Aishwarya Rai > Thank you so much for your love, support and encouragement, and your message shall be conveyed, if the filmmakers are listening. You sure have made me smile.
Sanjeet_ > Hi beautiful! Would you think twice about breaking millions of hearts when you plan to get married? ;) :) :)
Aishwarya Rai > I guess you all would want that magical moment to occur in my life too. And so, like every other girl, even I dream of it. But love, I have heard somewhere, stands the test of time and circumstances!!
Sheenu1 > Would you like to be the director of a film?
Aishwarya Rai > Well, I guess every actor is involved and passionate about his art. We all work as a part of the team with the director and often joke around that we are like assistant directors. And that makes work so much fun, exhausting and satisfying.
Abhilasha > How did you manage those heavy sarees, weighing in Kilos, in Devdas?
Aishwarya Rai > Well, I guess that's the joy and perk of being an Indian woman.
Titun > Do you think it was Chandramukhi or Paro who was more in love with Devdas?
Aishwarya Rai > I guess even Devdas himself could never answer this question, could he? Probably, Sarat Chandra Chatterjee knew the answer to this.
Ameez_n > From Miss World to Bollywood Queen, do you think it's possible to achieve more? Where do you go next?
Aishwarya Rai > Thanks a ton for adorning my mantle with titles! But, I have only been working and giving my best to whatever I have at hand. And the growth and sincere effort continues. Thanks.
Niraj > Do you think you will be able to outdo yourself, after Devdas and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam?
Aishwarya Rai > The fact that you are wondering definitely propels me. And thank you for your love, concern and support.
Aditi4uhi > Who are you closest to at home and who is your best friend?
Aishwarya Rai > My family is extremely special. I can't pick on any particular member. And if I may get philosophical, besides of course best friends in life, it is important that you be your best friend because if you are ok with yourself, you'll be ok with everyone in life.
8888 Q > Hi! Which is your favourite shot in the movie 'Devdas'?
Aishwarya Rai > That's a tricky question. The film is a visual treat. It's difficult to pick any one shot. It's an absolute treat in terms of content and experience.
