Eye Bank Association of India is focussed on the cause of combating Corneal Blindness. Corneal Blindness afflicts over 2 million young and old citizens all over India and vision can only be restored by the transplant of a human corneal tissue which has been received from another fellow human being. Corneas can be enucleated from any deceased person within a time window of 6 hours from the actual occurrence of death.
Eye Bank Association of India (EBAI) has a membership of eye banks, eyecare professionals including eye surgeons & ophthalmologists, and committed individuals and corporate organisations from all over India. EBAI is affiliated to the International Federation of Eye Banks which is headquartered in the United States of America.
EBAI is a non-government organisation, headquartered at Hyderabad and registered as a charitable trust. All donations to EBAI are exempt from taxation.
EBAI has also involved many celebrities from time to time to spearhead its campaign for eye donation. Many eminent people have offered their time and involvement including Aishwarya Rai, Amitabh & Jaya Bachhan, Shobha De, Naseeruddin Shah, Dhanraj Pillai & Dilip Vengsarkar.
Today EBAI’s efforts are bearing fruit and the central & state governments are working with it for an integrated effort at battling corneal blindness. The number of corneas being donated by citizens is steadily increasing and it now appears plausible that one day there will be enough corneas available to provide vision to the blind in India.
